Tobias Esche, Assistant Coach, Columbia University
Tobias Esche followed a unique pathway that reflects the opportunities available to ambitious student-athletes. As a U-19 player, Tobias was already competing at the senior level in the Oberliga (today’s Regionalliga), gaining valuable experience against seasoned professionals. One of his most memorable teammates during that time was Aílton, the legendary Brazilian Werder Bremen striker and 2004 Bundesliga Golden Boot winner.
Recognizing Tobi’s potential, Michele Lapenna connected with him early in his career to introduce the possibility of combining high-level soccer with higher education in the United States. Tobi embraced that opportunity, beginning a journey that demonstrates how international student-athletes can continue their athletic development while earning a university degree.
Challenge
Transitioning into the American collegiate environment required balancing:
- elite athletic competition
- academic performance
- cultural adaptation
- and long-term professional ambitions within the sport.
Tobias’s goals extended beyond playing alone. From early on, he sought to:
- develop as a leader
- study business and management
- and prepare for a future career in coaching and player development.
Process
Tobias joined Quinnipiac University, where he competed within the NCAA Division I men’s soccer program while earning a degree in Management with an outstanding 3.93 GPA.
He later completed his MBA at Southern New Hampshire University while continuing his development within collegiate soccer environments.
Throughout his pathway, Tobias focused on combining:
- education
- coaching development
- leadership
- and modern football methodology.
He further expanded his expertise through:
- UEFA B License
- USSF B License pathway
- advanced studies in Tactical Periodization.
At the same time, he began building his own coaching and player development brand through Tobias Esche Soccer Training.
Outcome
Tobias successfully transitioned from student-athlete into collegiate coaching leadership.
His coaching career has included:
- Assistant Coach at Quinnipiac University, helping the program win the MAAC regular season title
- Head Coach at Yeshiva University, where he led the program to its first conference final in school history with a 9-3-3 record
- and currently Assistant Men’s Soccer Coach at Columbia University.
His journey demonstrates how the U.S. college pathway can create opportunities far beyond playing -including leadership, coaching, entrepreneurship, and long-term professional development within the game.
