Sascha Görres, Director of Soccer, Virginia Velocity F.C.
Originally from Germany, Sascha Görres pursued the opportunity to combine high-level soccer with higher education in the United States.
Driven by both athletic ambition and personal development, he embraced the challenge of transitioning into the American collegiate system while competing at a high level.
Challenge
Like many international athletes, Sascha faced the challenge of:
- adapting to a new country and culture
- balancing academics with athletics
- and establishing himself within the competitive U.S. collegiate system.
The objective was not only to succeed on the field, but also to build a long-term future through sport and education.
Process
Through the collegiate pathway at University of North Carolina at Pembroke, Sascha developed into one of the top players in the country.
The U.S. college environment provided:
- elite competition
- leadership opportunities
- international exposure
- and a pathway into professional soccer.
During his time at UNC Pembroke, Sascha played a key role in one of the program’s most successful eras while continuing to grow personally and professionally.
Outcome
Sascha earned All-American honors at UNC Pembroke and went on to play professionally with the Richmond Kickers.
In recognition of his impact and accomplishments, Sascha was inducted individually into the UNC Pembroke Athletics Hall of Fame, and the 2004 UNC Pembroke men’s soccer team was also inducted as a Hall of Fame team.
Today, he continues to shape the next generation of players as Director of Soccer at Soccer Velocity, where he combines his international experience, collegiate success, and professional background to mentor young athletes.
His journey demonstrates how the U.S. college pathway can create long-term opportunities in:
